After university and some years in the Civil Service and academia, I had a long career in broadcasting, working in various roles for various parts of ITV. I also chaired a group that won an independent radio regional franchise, before serving for some years as Chief Executive of a large arts and education charity based in the West Country.
In addition, I have served as a director of a number of companies - including some FTSE listed – and have been a Trustee of numerous charities. In the North East I have been a Trustee of the Baltic, Chair of the Tyneside Cinema and Chair of the Development Trust for Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums. Locally, I have served for some years as Chair of Visit County Durham, and until 2019 was Canon Treasurer of Durham Cathedral.
As you will see from my CV, I have long experience in the private, public and third sectors. I have little time for orthodox management theory and a preference for the application of careful thought, intelligence and pragmatism to problems. I believe in personal responsibility and in simply making things better.
